Promoting Global Citizenship Education (GCE) and Scaling up Climate Change Awareness in Ugandan Schools

In a recently concluded UNESCO Participation Programme titled “Promoting Global Citizenship Education and Scaling up the Whole Institutional Approach to Climate Change,” UNATCOM provided comprehensive training to school coordinators from 50 ASPnet Schools across Uganda. The objective was to empower these coordinators with the requisite tools and knowledge for implementing Global Citizenship Education (GCE) and integrating a comprehensive approach to climate change within their respective institutions. The school coordinators were introduced to concepts and methodologies of the whole school approach to climate change and GCE. They underwent training on implementation, and teaching and learning resources were provided. Additionally, supervision and monitoring of school plans related to climate change and GCE were conducted.

65 school coordinators representing diverse educational institutions underwent extensive training as part of this initiative. The training, inclusive of both new ASPnet aspirants and existing members, aimed at cultivating a cohort of change agents equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to confront the challenges of the 21st century. Additionally, these coordinators formulated action plans to facilitate the systematic implementation of interventions, serving as a blueprint for progress and ensuring accountability.

The project effectively advanced UNESCO’s mandate in the education sector through the dissemination of UNESCO guides and resource materials, engagement with stakeholders across various tiers, and online outreach efforts, thereby augmenting UNESCO’s footprint in Uganda. Looking forward, the project envisages further capacity-building workshops, reinforced support for ASPnet’s contribution to GCE and climate change mitigation, and advocacy for the adoption of ASPnet approaches by all schools in Uganda.

This reflects not only the tangible accomplishments but also the enduring commitment of Uganda and UNESCO to nurture a generation of global citizens equipped to address the pressing challenges of our time. Through education and collaborative endeavors, the journey towards sustainability continues, one school at a time.
